EU congratulates new Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett



EU Council President Charles Michel congratulated new Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett in a message on Twitter on Sunday after a party alliance toppled Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Hoping to strengthen (ing) the (EU-Israel) partnership for common prosperity and towards lasting regional peace and stability,” he tweeted.

The European Council represents the member states of the European Union.

Bennett, a right-wing Jewish nationalist and former tech millionaire, assumes command of an Israeli government made up of an eight-party coalition.

Their alliance ended the 12 years in power of Benjamin Natanyahu.

Bennett, a former Netanyahu defense minister, vowed to keep Israel safe from Iran, promising that “Israel will not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons,” pursuing a goal that the Islamic republic denies.

The diverse anti-Netanyahu bloc was improvised by the secular centrist Yair Lapid, a former television host.

It spans the political spectrum, with three parties from the right, two from the center and two from the left, and even a conservative Arab Islamic party.
